Cyber Security Cartographies:

CySeCa

The CySecCa research project (funded from 2012-16) aimed to bring together different ways of viewing and visualising information flows across an organisation. It developed techniques to elicit information flow details within both the computer network and human network and then examined how both views can complement each other. As part of this work approaches to storyboarding and cartooning were developed to draw out the wider security context and identify how the digital security of data fits into this wider context. These can be used to gain a combined picture of organisational and technical asset compliance behaviours.

The art of playing the panopticon

About

Digital delivery of the UK welfare system to a disadvantaged community in the North East of England showed that reliance on technological security mechanisms makes underlying administrative processes less, rather than more, secure.

Rather than being regarded as a technical system, we present additional findings that suggest such a service is better conceptualised as a social system with technological elements embedded within it. We also make recommendations for service design, providers and users.

It posits that technological innovation must attend to the routinisation of everyday life through which people establish ontological security if such innovation is to be supportive.

As information security is called upon to operate in increasingly unstable spaces, often with no clear consensus about the need for security, the role of the information security practitioner becomes ever more complex. 

We employ broader political and social theories of security to analyse data from nine semi-structured interviews of Australian information security practitioners, identify tacit securing techniques, and discover how messaging is used to create an agreed value consensus across conflict-ridden environments.

A Tactile Visual Library To Support User Experience Storytelling

Through two user experience storytelling sessions, we present an adult visual narrative stimulus (tactile visual library) that supports the reduction of physical distance between the user-centred design practitioner (maker of the visual narrative artefact) and the user narrative.

We discuss the design philosophy and role of the tactile visual library and present the method developed to rigorously analyse, verify and display adult user narratives.

Who says personas can't dance?

The use of comic strips to design information security personas

This paper presents comic strips as an approach to align personas and narrative scenarios; the resulting visual artifact was tested with information security practitioners, who often struggle with wider engagement. 

It offers ways in which different professional roles can work together to share understanding of complex topics such as information security. It also offers user-centred design practitioners a way to reflect on, and participate with, user research data.
