Punitive structures place constraints on the communication available to families separated by prison, who depend on telephone calls and letters to maintain familie ties and roles. 

We point to the need for developing technologies that support the sharing of everyday experiences, consider how the punitive climate impacts on communication technology design and how to balance this climate with the objective of strengthening family ties.
